"Alussa on Hymy" (At the Beginning There Is a Smile)

In this compelling video projection, Swiss and German visual artist Nina Schipoff, currently living in Geneva, transforms herself into a living portrait, inviting the viewer into an intimate and profound interaction. In “Alussa on Hymy”(At the Beginning There Is a Smile), Schipoff smiles gently, blurring the boundaries between observer and subject and triggering the activation of mirror-neurons, those fascinating components of the brain that allow us to empathize, understand, and connect with others.

This work delves into the core of human sociality, reminding us that we are inherently social beings. Mirror neurons, the neural basis of our capacity for empathy, play a crucial role in shaping how we perceive and relate to those around us. The artist’s smile becomes more than just an expression; it acts as a conduit, linking us to one another and highlighting the essential role that human connections play in our search for meaning and purpose. Additionally, the concept of neural entrainment, where our brainwaves naturally synchronize with those of others, further reinforces how deeply our minds and bodies are wired to connect.

Scientific research shows that a smile is more than just a reflection of happiness; it plays a crucial role in creating a positive feedback loop within our brains. When we experience happiness, our brains release endorphins, which prompt us to smile. This smile then sends signals back to the brain, encouraging the production of additional mood-enhancing hormones like serotonin and dopamine. Interestingly, the ability to smile is something we are born with; advancements in 3D ultrasound technology have revealed that even developing babies smile in the womb. This deep-seated connection between our emotions and facial expressions highlights just how fundamental smiling is to our nature.

“Alussa on Hymy” extends beyond personal connections to serve as a broader call for collective action. When we come together, our combined intelligence and creativity enable us to tackle global challenges more effectively, whether it’s addressing climate change or ensuring the survival of our species in an increasingly warming world. This artwork underscores the importance of unity in facing these pressing issues, reminding us that collaboration is vital for our continued well-being.
